Alex Marquez crowned Moto2 World Champion

Alex Marquez became the first ever Triumph-powered Moto2 World Champion at the Malaysian Grand Prix, which was also his first Moto2 world title.

Taking ten podiums, five of which were victories, and setting five new lap records in the process, the EG 0.0 Marc VDS rider has sealed what was a hotly-contested championship fight with just one round remaining, in his native Spain. With five wins, he has recorded more than any other rider this season as his style has really gelled with the more powerful nature of the Triumph 765cc triple.

After 18 rounds of this incredible season of racing, which has been some of the closest the Moto2 class has ever enjoyed, a remarkable 13 lap records have been set, 11 outright circuit records and 17 fastest top speeds, including Stefano Manzi’s peak of 301.8km/h – making 2019 the first time Moto2 has ever exceeded 300km/h.

Marquez may have won the title, but behind him the battle rages for the final podium positions. Thomas Luthi was the man pushing Marquez in the latter stages of the title chase, but an on-form Brad Binder took his fourth victory of the season in Malaysia, moving him into second in the standings, just four points ahead of Luthi. A further 20 points back, it may be a harder climb but Jorge Navarro also is mathematically in the podium hunt too going into the final round. There’s a lot still at stake!

Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer, said: “Congratulations from everyone at Triumph to Alex and EG 0.0 Marc VDS for sealing this stunning championship with his, and our, first ever Moto2 World title! The numbers speak for themselves, but notwithstanding three non-points scores, he’s barely been off the podium. This has unquestionably been his best season in Moto2, and a lot of that is the way in which he’s been able to gel with our 765cc triple and its power characteristics, which compared to the previous Moto2 engine allow a much more aggressive way of riding and allow the riders to really be able to muscle the bikes around, rather than relying purely on corner speed. This is also what’s led to this season being one of the closest and most exciting in the category’s history. It will be interesting to see who claims the final two places on the podium in the season finale at Valencia.”

The Triumph Moto2™ 765cc race engine is a development of the class-leading Street Triple RS 765cc road motorcycle and produces more than 140PS and the same visceral soundtrack. Next up for the Moto2 category is the season finale – The Valencia GP is round 19 and brings the curtain down on a long and closely-fought year, and the conclusion of an incredible first year for Triumph in the Moto2 World Championship.
